How do you look for a job?

Question by Huh?: How do you look for a job?
I have never really had to “look” for a job or go to interviews. I am now officially “job hunting” for the first time in my life, and I’m not sure what to do or where to start. Where do I look for jobs? Can you send your resume to a company even if they haven’t posted a job listing? How many times do you call to follow up before you become annoying? If you email your resume, when do you send a follow up email? How many hours a day do you spend looking for a job? If you go to an interview, is it okay to make pleasant chat with the receptionist while you wait, or will they resent you for trying to butter them up?

But most importantly, where is this magical list of openings that I’m supposed to be responding to?

Thank you in advance.
