Is there an appropriate way to ask my boss if they are considering laying me off?

Question by Royal Blue: Is there an appropriate way to ask my boss if they are considering laying me off?
I’m just really worried because my company is laying off employees, slowly but surely…and just today a coworker that I’m close to got laid off, and she’s the only one with that position, so I was really surprised. I’m the only one with my position also, and I feel that my position is really important, but now I’m scared. So should I ask?

No, don’t do that.

Be confident, but update your resume just in case.

No, no, no. If they aren’t thinking about letting you go, you may put the idea into your boss’s mind and set him thinking in that direction. No, don’t ask.

I don’t think you should ask. When the time comes, if it comes, then you deal with it then.
