Dont Fear Lay-offs. Here 3 Things to Consider If You are in That Situation

Article by Jay Yanuaria

Currently, we are in a hard state of economy. You work for a company that has been going through a lot of changes and upheaval. You are already hearing words around about lay-offs, and you trouble about what will be next. If you’ve been a great employee and the lay-off is not because of anything you’ve done, be sure you ask these three inquiries as you are being handed your cherished paycheck.

1. Can you convert your remaining vacation leaves credits?

In most companies, they allow unused leave balances to be exchanged to cash. Better get it now if you are engaged in the company who allows it because it will be harder later. Some companies reserve you to roll over your unused time from one year to the next, while others have a use it or disregard it policy. You can check your employee handbook if you are not positive regarding this.

2. Can you get letters of character and testimonials?

You can ask your superior, workmates and big customers for a letter of recommendations. You will be needing those letters of recommendations for you to get a job better. Better do it sooner because it will be tighter get it after your employment with them had been dropped.

3. Can you get severance pay?

You are not automatically assured this, unless it was conditioned in your employment contract when you were hired. Typically, one week of severance is given for every year of service to the company, but this can be negotiable. And, especially if you’ve recently finished an essential project, been rewarded or achieved a major goal, be sure to prompt them. It may buy you another week of severance pay they weren’t projecting on passing.

These are just some components to think. The significant thing is to do it immediately because we don’t know; maybe this is the last chance you receive.

What if doesn’t work? You’ll never know, unless you try, and the worst they can do is say no. If the moment happens, maybe you won’t have another opportunity to ask these questions again.

I wish you best of luck in your career.
