Pink Slip is an idiom for losing one’s job. Workers used to get a pink slip at the end of the day informing them of the decision. Laid off more specifically refers to losing your job through no fault of your own. Fired typically means you did something wrong and were let go because of it. Pink slip can refer to being laid off or fired.

When people got fired they got a pink slip. The term stayed. Now the pink slip means your fired because you did something wrong according to the company. Laid off means there’s a lack of work and can not financially keep you. Most the time you can get unemployment when laid off but not fired.
