How does being in a union and getting laid off work?

My husband has been working at his job for about three months and he was just laid off, he was paying his union dues and paying for his book also. What does being in the union do for him? Will they be able to get him another job? Can he still pay his dues and still have a pension and benefits? How does this work? Where do we go from here? I don’t really know what the union is about and what purpose it serves so can someone please advise or point me in the right direction.

in the case of most unions, he would go to the union hall and tell them he has been laid off, they should find work for him, that’s what they are supposed to do.

call the union

    Your husband has a Union Steward…He needs to address his questions about this to his Steward who will be able to answer these things.

    In my union it works like this;
    You get laid off, you call the unemployment office (in Texas, trade union members don’t go to the unemployment office, they just call it in), Then you get your name on the out of work list. The union sends you out on the next available job when your name comes to the top of the list, takes anywhere from the next day to a week or two, rarely longer. You’re given a three month grace on your dues if you need it. You keep all benefits while you’re out of work. Course, every union is different, this is generally for trade unions.
    Then, in about six weeks, after you’ve been back to work a while, the state will send you a check for the time you laid off.
