I can’t afford legal counsel since I’ve been laid off from my teaching job. Where can I go to get assistance, or get my own paperwork so I can go back to court and ask the judge for more money to accommodate my son’s needs?

Go to the ‘Family Probate’ section of your courthouse and ask for ‘modification’ paperwork. They will tell you how to fill them out. You list your reason why you need the child support judgment modified (you got laid off). Then they run the paperwork through their system. it will probably take a few weeks to a month to go through. Then you get a court date in the mail. You and your ex show up at the courthouse. At that point, you go in front of a ‘moderator’ and try to amicably reach an agreement. If you can’t then you go in front of the judge and he/she will decide.

Talk to your teachers association and look into government aid. Since you have no job he will be “accommodating” for yours and your son’s needs which is not fair to him.
Child support has nothing to do with how much money you make…It is for the child ..They only go by what your ex makes..Trust me they will not give you more money been there done that ..
It isn’t based off of your income, but his. You need to seek assistance for yourself.
If he lost his job they probably wouldn’t reduce his payments.(it takes months to get a hearing and they almost never grant reductions)
His support is for the child, not you. You shouldn’t be living off support payments, they are for the care of the child and every penny should be for child care.
The first answer was the ONLY one that is correct. Usually child support enforcement will also take your case and get you a hearing.
