How is an interview different if you are just being interviewed for a promotion/ higher position?

Question by 1l0v3: How is an interview different if you are just being interviewed for a promotion/ higher position?
I have been an intern with a company for two years. I am applying for a full time position as an admin assistant. How will this interview differ from outer office hiring. What should I expect?

Hello-

If your company is large and you are interviewing with another department head, your interview will be the same as if you were an outside candidate. Although you could have a significant leg up on outside candidates because of your 2 year tenure and your boss’s endorsement of you to the other manager.

If you are interviewing with your current boss or a manager you know very well, it’s a little different story. Some companies have a policy that they want to always hire the best candidate, regardless if they are inside or outside the company. So, even though you may be perfect for the job, your company will advertise and interview outside candidates as well. Again, you have an advantage if you’ve done excellent work.

On the other hand, because companies fear lawsuits or accusations of discrimination from their employees, they will interview any internal candidates.

My advice would be to prepare for your interview just like any other interview. Put your best foot forward. See job interview tips and the most common interview questions via the link below.

Best of luck with your interview. Hope you get the promotion.
