I’m 48 years old & unemployed. I could really benefit from the support that might be found from others in my situation. What is the fastest & most effective way to locate such groups in my area, which is Washington, DC? As I stated above, I am NOT interested in 40+ or groups that charge membership fees. But any other suggestions would be welcome.

Check out your local library. Many offer job placement classes. I went to one when I first moved to the Midwest and chatted with the person leading the group and he put me in touch with some organizations that helped me network to a job. Also, you can try the unemployment site for your area. Ours has a group that meets regularly to help network. Do you go to church? There might be a group in your church – or maybe you could start one. Finally, grab the local paper. The business sections usually list events for the week and many times there are networking opportunities in there. If they are not free, they generally let you sit in on one or two meetings for free – which would ‘buy’ you enough time to see if the group is your style.
