I work seasonally for the park service and will be returning to work in the spring. How do you look into collecting unemployment? Also, do you know if you can volunteer while collecting unemployment?

You won’t know what you qualify for until you apply. But unemployment is only for those who are “actively seeking employment.” If you voluntarily work only seasonally, you may not qualify.

You should be able to apply with the understanding if a job for which you are qualified becomes available you would take it. Seasonal tax preparers collect unemployment because there are few jobs for them as tax prepares after April 15th. They are not required to take jobs as construction workers only tax preparers. As for volunteer work it would be OK with one exception and that would be if you were volunteering for a job that would normally be paid but you do it as a volunteer so that you keep your unemployment benefits.
