I just got the heads up that I will be laid off this afternoon. I am not mad, I understand the company is hurting from the poor economy right now, nonetheless, I am a really emotional person, and I really don’t want to cry. How can I prepare myself to handle this maturely?

First, take a deep breath! Then be grateful for the time you had at the company and look forward to a little time off and a break from work. Now is the time to look forward to a new stage in your life, you can take the next step and find another job very soon and keep on truckin’!

alcohol is the first thing that comes to mind. maybe you have a flask in your desk? bar across the street?
otherwise, look on the bright side! the sooner you can get out from a dead-end company the sooner you can start looking for a longer term position/ employer. as previous poster stated, take some time for yourself (1-2 days) and then start hunting.
enjoy the long weekend.
Look on the bright side, at least you won’t have to get up early Monday morning.
Seriously, just take a deep breath and go to a happy place in your mind. The person on the other end of this lay off probably feels worse than you do. He/she will most likely be fighting back tears as well.
